INCAPITALHEALTH: Good medicine demands accurate diagnosis: Peezy is a critical step forward

Without an accurate diagnosis, the rest of medicine is potentially dangerous. All medicine must commence following an accurate diagnosis. One of the most fundamental factors affecting the quality of the diagnosis is the quality of the sample. Many types of samples can be taken, but urine is one of the most popular as it is non-invasive and is an excellent medium for assessing patient health status.

The clinical information obtained from a urine specimen is influenced by the collection method, timing and handling. The traditional forms of collection and transport containers for urine specimens are prone to contamination. Determining which urine collection method and container should be used depends on the type of laboratory test ordered. Although, up to now there are no specific guidelines for how the collection should be conducted, avoiding the introduction of contaminants into the specimen is recommended. This requires catheterisation, explicit instructions to patients so that they do not inadvertently contaminate the collection system, or a simpler collection system – such as Peezy.

Contaminated samples potentially give mis-leading information. Although currently adopted by Harley Street gynaecologists, following NHS Tariff approval, trials are currently underway to incorporate the new Peezy system into the NHS. This is another example of the UK leading the way in medicine – and specifically in medical diagnostics.
